The Art And Science

The art and science of photography completely mesmerize me – from walking in the peace and quiet of nature, being inspired to capture an image, to printing that captured image in final form. Each image involves hundreds of decisions – what to leave in, what to leave out, when to open the shutter, what to emphasize, and what to minimize, etc. 

The visual art of photography has many technical and scientific aspects, but the ultimate result expresses the artist’s vision of the world. The camera is the tool used to capture that expression, much like a sculptor’s chisel. Ultimately, though, the camera is only a tool. Each photographer wields their equipment in a way that expresses their unique vision. It is intensely personal, as each artist exposes a piece of themselves in their work. 

Mastery Of My Craft

Mastery of your tool is vital to capturing those one-of-a-kind images – fumbling around with the camera at critical times when the light is popping, or something unique is occurring will lead to missed opportunities. But, even the importance of mastering your tool shrinks compared to the photographer's eyes, skill, and vision. I’ve seen amazing iPhone images that are far better in composition and lighting than those created with more complex equipment.

Once I have captured an image in the field, there are many steps to developing that image. My aim is to faithfully present what I saw and felt at the time of capture. Printing is the final step in presenting that moment in time and space to you.

Although I have pursued many other photographic outlets, “earth portraits” or nature photography is where I have chosen to spend my time, energy, and focus. I've passionately pursued nature and landscape photography for the last thirty-five years as my primary artistic focus. Nature’s peace and quiet have always spoken to my soul at a very deep level, and my images reflect that voice's impact. I hope that they move you as well.
